Discovering Changxing Island: A Dog-Friendly Retreat

If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway with your furry friend, Changxing Island is a fantastic option. This lesser-known gem, close to Chongming Island, is known for its sweet oranges and beautiful landscapes.
A Serene Park Experience

Changxing Island is about an hour’s drive from downtown Shanghai, featuring a dog-friendly park that’s perfect for a day trip. While the park is free for visitors, there is a small fee for dogs—40 RMB per dog, regardless of size.
Although the park requires dogs to be on-leash, we’ve had no issues letting ours roam free in most areas. The park is quite spacious, and if you explore sections away from the main areas near the restaurant, you’ll find it’s very quiet, with hardly anyone around.
The park, known as Changxing Dao Jiaye Gongyuan (长兴岛郊野公园), has various zones, including playgrounds for children. Some areas are free, while others may have an entry fee. There are also petting zoo sections where dogs are allowed; we made sure to keep our dogs on a leash here—Hugo even had a curious encounter with one of the goats!
