Your guide to the dog friendly Meilan Lake in Shanghai

Spend a day at the dog friendly Meilan lake

Getting There

Meilan Lake is quite accessible, depending on your location in the city. From Jinqiao in Pudong, it took me about an hour to reach, but the journey was definitely worth it. The area is expansive, featuring various sections to explore. It was fairly easy to get a didi both there and back. There is also ample parking space if you are able to drive there yourself.

A Day at the Lake

Upon arrival, we decided to wander around and let our dogs off-leash in the less crowded spots. After some exploration, we made our way to the lakeside, where we found an ideal picnic spot that wasn’t too busy. With six dogs in tow, we enjoyed our picnic while the dogs happily roamed. The lake is easily accessible, making it perfect for dogs that love water. One of our dogs even took a refreshing swim, clearly enjoying herself.

Enjoying the Surroundings

After our picnic, we continued our stroll around the lake, and our dogs thrived in the open space. Most people seemed unfazed by our furry companions. As we walked, we stumbled upon a large lawn area, which was lively due to the beautiful weather. Many families had set up tents for a day of fun. We also spotted some paddle boats, which I’ve heard are dog-friendly, though I can’t personally confirm that.

Amusement and Architecture

There’s a small amusement area with rides and trampolines for kids, but this section isn’t very accommodating for dogs.

Overall, Meilan Lake offers a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. The park’s size allows for off-leash enjoyment for our dogs. Across from the lake, there’s a European-style area featuring unique architecture. Despite its intriguing appearance, this section seemed relatively abandoned, with few shops and even fewer visitors. We did find a bar, but unfortunately, it was closed during our visit.
